Abstract

Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage are vital for improving survival rates during cardiac emergencies. However, public awareness and knowledge about these life-saving techniques remain limited. Objective: This research aimed to examine the sociodemographic factors influencing knowledge and awareness of medical emergency activation, CPR initiation, and AED use among individuals attending the Emergency Department at Hospital Sultan Idris Shah Serdang. Methodology: This cross-sectional research included 282 patients using convenience sampling at the hospital in Malaysia. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed with IBM SPSS Version 29.0, employing independent t-tests, ANOVA, and correlation tests to assess the relationship between sociodemographic variables and knowledge of CPR and AED. Results: Most participants were female (58.5%), Muslim (92.5%), and Malay (90.4%), with an average age of 35.2 years. Many were married (58.5%), had a household income below RM 5250 (70.2%), and worked in the private sector (46.2%). About 26.6% reported having family members with heart diseases. Significant sociodemographic factors affecting awareness of CPR and AED included marital status (p=0.010), income (p=0.003), education (p<0.001), employment (p<0.001), and family history of cardiac disease (p<0.001). Knowledge was also linked to marital status (p=0.005), income (p<0.001), education (p<0.001), employment (p=0.007), and family history (p=0.048). Conclusion: Marital status, income, education, employment, and family history influenced CPR and AED awareness. Targeted training, school-based programs, and culturally appropriate initiatives can improve participation and strengthen community readiness for cardiac arrest response
