Abstract
Social media platforms are thriving in Malaysia. Initially started in the United States in the early 2000s, it entered the Malaysian media landscape with the introduction of Friendster, MySpace and Facebook. Of late, Instagram, Twitter/X, WhatsApp, TikTok and YouTube are popular social media platforms in Malaysia, especially among young adults. The influencer culture in Malaysia is also unique, with content creation that is diverse but must cater to religious and cultural sensitivity of a multi-ethnic community. Some challenges of using social media in Malaysia centers around privacy concerns, digital divide and online misbehaviors such as managing frauds and scams, dealing with cyberbullying as well as misinformation, rumors and fake news. While crucial in highlighting social and political discourses that otherwise would not have a platform, it is important for authorities, non-governmental agencies (NGOs) and other stakeholders to address these challenges to ensure that the social media environment remains safe, productive and worthwhile.
