Abstract

The success completion of a postgraduate student’s research is highly dependable on the supervision that the student receives. This implies that the making of a scholar begins with a good supervision that is managed by an equally good supervisory team. To achieve this, it is imperative that members of the supervisory team understand their roles and responsibilities so that they would be able to support the student from the commencement of the study until the submission of the thesis. It is a common practice in almost all universities, that a postgraduate student is supervised by a supervisory team consisting of two or more members of the academic. Each member of the supervisory team should know his/her own role and function towards the student and also their team members. The major supervisor as befitting of his/her title, would take the lead in the supervision, while the other members support the major supervisor. Hence, the supervisory team need to identify their roles so that they can work as a team efficiently. This chapter aims to discuss the roles, functions and responsibilities of the supervisory team for a successful supervision. It will also delineate the relationship and teamwork that the members of the supervisory team need to foster and highlight the responsibilities that they team need to fulfil in developing a synergetic and dynamic relationship between the supervisory members and the student.
