Abstract

***** As academics, our most important beneficiaries are undoubtedly the students we serve. Understanding their perspectives—both challenges and potential solutions—is critical to ensuring the highest quality education. In addition, educators must continually improve their abilities to adapt to students’ changing expectations without clinging to outdated methods. The widespread use of smartphones and addiction to social media pose a great threat to student performance. Nowadays, we often see people walking, eating, jogging or talking while engrossed in their phones. Unfortunately, students may be more susceptible to the influence of mobile phones and the Internet. Recognizing that a problem exists is the first step in finding a solution. Subsequently, determining the most appropriate course of action becomes critical. Equally important is the role that educators play in implementing these solutions, which requires them to fully understand the expectations and needs of their students. With these considerations in mind, I surveyed 200 students, including 124 females and 76 males, and asked the following questions : 1. “ What makes it difficult for you to concentrate when studying?” 2. “ What methods do you use to stay focused and reduce distractions? 3. " Do you consider yourself to be an accomplished reader? Please provide details to support your answer." 4. “ From your perspective, how can educators help students improve their study and reading habits? The survey results reflect broader global trends. The samples represent Generation Z and Generation Alpha (0-24 years old), who live in a virtual global village full of challenges and opportunities. They are known as the most distractible generations, living in a world where algorithmic prompts constantly promote rapid clicks, scrolling and impetuousness. Difficulty in staying focused during learning seems to be a common experience for students in different regions.
