Abstract

Monocarpia is an Asian tree genus in the family Annonaceae and the monotypic tribe Monocarpieae. Its native range is Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatera. Monocarpia maingayi (Hook. f. & Thomson) I. M. Turner is locally known as ‘cagau’ or ‘juat’ in Malaysia and is a tree up to 31 m tall, mainly found in primary rainforests, usually on hillsides and undulating countryside up to 2,500 feet [2]. Phytochemical studies of the genus Monocarpia have resulted in the isolation of cycloartane triterpenes; however, the literature search did not reveal any report on the essential oil composition of M. maingayi.
