Abstract

Introduction : Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), a globally and locally prevalent chronic metabolic disorder, is well associated with life-long complications if poorly controlled. Hence, this study aims to determine the prevalence and factors associated with glycemic control among T2DM patients in a selected hospital university in Kuantan. Method : A cross-sectional study was done on 205 T2DM patients attending Hospital Sultan Ahmad Shah (SASMEC) from August to September 2023. Data were obtained through validated self-administered questionnaire and patient’s medical record. Descriptive statistics and regression tests were used to assess the association between glycemic control and its associated factors. Result : Out of 205 patients, 64.9% have poor diabetic control. Significant factors that were observed to have association with poor glycemic control include age (p=0.016), ethnicity (p=0.004), duration of T2DM (p=0.020) and diabetic knowledge (p=0.007). Probability of having poor glycemic control was 2.3 times higher in patients diagnosed with T2DM for more than 10 years (p=0.025), 5.5 times higher in insulin users (p=0.012), 3.3 times higher in both OGLDs & insulin users (p=0.012) and lower probability of 0.7 times is associated with patients aged 65 above. Conclusion : The prevalence of poor diabetic control was high among the respondents and the significant factors associated with it include age, ethnicity, duration of T2DM, types of medications used and diabetic knowledge. Hence, a strategic intervention must be conducted among T2DM patients in order to avert possible life-long complications of diabetes
