Abstract

Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dr Mohd. Kamal Hassan (1942-2023) was one of the magnificent symbols of wisdom, erudition, and dedication. He was immersed in the dreams of a revived ummah with a deep understanding of Islam and the meaning of being a Muslim. His vision of the empowerment of ummah was founded on the Tawḥīdic paradigm of holistic development and integrated knowledge. He views the ummah as a global community committed to moral excellence, justice, and the pursuit of goodness in this world and the Hereafter. His lifetime achievements reflect the scholarly concern for integration in diverse realms, such as: between revealed knowledge and human sciences, revelation and reason, Qur’ānic and cosmic signs, academia and activism, theory and practice, intellectuality and spirituality, simplicity and professionalism, leadership and management, traditional works and contemporary thoughts, and stage and page. In all these realms, he upheld a justly balanced approach. His speeches were well prepared in written format and never failed to give the audience new insights and lead the students to excel in their pursuit of knowledge. In his articulations, he consciously and delicately used Arabic terms with nuanced explanations, mainly when he introduced his innovative thoughts and fresh insights. It is sometimes accompanied by an explanation of words’ origins in the Qur’ān, Sunnah, or classical texts. It helps the audience to relate and dig further into the basis, authenticity, and universality of the thought from an Islamic point of view.
