Abstract
Moringa oleifera as a bio-disinfectant in water treatment plant system is one of the newer alternatives to replace chemical disinfectants utilization which are harmful and toxic. As a miracle tree with many advantages like its cheap price and accessibility, Moringa oleifera tree is the best option available nowadays. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to develop a pilot scale surface water treatment system using Moringa oleifera seeds as a disinfectant by using the previously obtained optimisation and modelling results. Three experimental studies using the pilot plant were done to compare the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera as a disinfectant. Based on a previous study, the optimum parameter of 125 mg/L Moringa oleifera dosage is used. The coagulants were varied using Moringa oleifera and polyaluminium chloride (PAC). For the first set of experiments, Moringa oleifera is used as a coagulant while 20 ppm and 10 ppm of PAC are used in the second and the third set of experiments, respectively. The findings show that Moringa oleifera can act as a disinfectant to remove bacteria in water treatment plant. The removal efficiency for the pilot plant treatment has shown a reduction of 85% and 99% of the total coliform count and the total aerobic plate count after the disinfection, respectively. Hence, Moringa oleifera is suggested as an alternative to conventional disinfectants and it is recommended to be used in non-urban areas or in emergency situations.
