Abstract

Environmental Capacity Building (ECB) for Forest Management Certification (FMC) in Sarawak is a critical programme that must be further consolidated and streamlined to support Forest Timber Licence (FTL) holders in obtaining FMC by year 2022 as per Sarawak Government Policy target. This study investigates the application of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) Areas during project initiating and planning phase as well as the assessment of project success based on feedback from participants involved with the capacity building programme. A case study method based on secondary data analysis and observations was applied to address the research questions. The findings revealed that the application of PMBoK during initiating and planning phase for ECB for FMC in Sarawak is available and supported with a well-designed training program content. The score for knowledge areas under Initiating Process Group was 100% (Outstanding) while Planning Process Group scored 65% (Good). Training programme evaluation showed an average score of 82%, while participant knowledge evaluation using paired-samples t-test revealed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (*p* < 0.0001). The study concludes that the application of PMBoK has led to the success of this project in terms of forest management professionals' capacity enhancement and increasing the number of certified FTL from 7 in 2020 to 13 in 2022.
