Abstract

Abstract: This article analyses Malaysia-Türkiye relations from 1864 to 1980, emphasising the findings during the administrations of Malaysia’s first three prime ministers. It traces the relationship between Malaysia and Türkiye in two periods: (i) the first part covers historical relations from 1864 to 1957, which includes the Ottoman Consulate in Singapore, Johor-Ottoman relations, Pan-Islamism, and Inshirah Hanim’s visit to Singapore in 1930; and (ii) the second part begins after Malaysia gained independence in 1957, long after the transformation of the Ottoman state into the Republic of Türkiye. Our analysis concludes with the final years of Tun Hussein Onn's administration in 1980. This research utilises primary source documents such as archival materials, government publications, reports, and newspapers. These documents are heavily referenced to obtain new information for future studies on these relations. This paper concludes that Malaysia and Türkiye have actively sought to develop their relationship, from the time of British colonialism and the Ottoman Empire to the era of modern Malaysia and Türkiye. However, political and economic challenges, such as lack of personnel, distance, conflicts, and wars, caused these relations to progress at a slow pace.
