Abstract

Riverfront settlements along the Musi River in Palembang exhibit varied spatial characteristics in density and growth patterns. This study analyzes the proportion and potential of open spaces across four typologies: organic dense, organic sparse, planned dense, and planned sparse. Using GIS-based spatial analysis and digitized building data, the built-up area proportion is calculated to evaluate open-space availability and its socio-ecological potential. Results indicate that organic dense areas have the highest built-up proportion (59%), reflecting limited formal open space, whereas planned sparse areas show only 27%, indicating significant development potential. Settlement morphology influences the distribution and optimization of open spaces. The study recommends a typology-based approach: adaptive, community-driven strategies for dense organic areas and structured green space planning for low-density planned areas, supporting inclusive and resilient riverfront development
