Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a 12-week home-based exercise program integrated with Health Belief Model (HBM)-based education in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A mixed-method approach was employed, involving 15 patients and 8 clinicians. Patients attended 4 60-minute face-to-face group education sessions during the first 2 weeks. The exercise intervention comprised resistance training using resistance bands, combined with 3-5 weekly sessions of home-based aerobic exercise, to generate quantitative data. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews, with both patients and clinicians interviewed and audio-recorded. Data were collected between June and December 2023 and were structured in accordance with feasibility study guidelines. Qualitative data were analyzed using directed deductive content analysis with NVivo 14 software, whereas quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Eleven patients completed the study, expressing high satisfaction with the program. Both clinicians and patients provided positive feedback about the proposed intervention. A median of 68.5% and 75.0% of the patients participated in home-based aerobic and resistance training exercises, respectively. Additionally, 91.0% of patients appreciated the clear explanations and found the supplementary booklets provided during the education program helpful in performing exercises. Conclusion: The proposed intervention was acceptable and preliminarily feasible, with its design aligned to standardized exercise recommendations.
