Abstract

The integration of smart farming technologies into educational and community based agricultural programmed provides an opportunity to strengthen knowledge transfer, agricultural skills, entrepreneurship and sustainable development. This study examines the implementation and outcomes of the Jauhar Urban Farming Melon Fertigation Project, a collaborative initiative involving the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Pusu. The project was implemented from April 2025 to April 2026 and focused on the application of fertigation technology in melon production, complemented by technical training, business model development, marketing strategies and community engagement. This study employs a descriptive case study approach based on project documentation, field activities, training records, production outcomes, financial records and observations of project implementation. The findings indicate that the project generated both tangible and intangible outcomes. Tangibly, the project produced approximately 270–290 melon fruits, of which 230 units were sold, with a reported net profit of RM4,130. The project also established a practical learning environment through technical workshops, field-based cultivation activities and marketing training. Intangible outcomes included knowledge and skills transfer, collective accountability, professional collaboration and stronger institutional relationships between the university and participating school. The findings suggest that smart farming projects can function beyond agricultural production by serving as a platform for experiential learning, community empowerment, entrepreneurship and education for sustainable development. The study contributes to the discussion on university-community engagement by demonstrating how a small-scale smart farming initiative can integrate agricultural technology, education and socioeconomic development within a school community context.
