Abstract

Urban agriculture offers opportunities to strengthen local food provision, but the adoption of smart farming requires attention to affordability, technical capacity and ethical governance. This study examines the Internet of Things (IoT) in urban farming in Selangor through Maqasid al-Shariah and considers artificial intelligence (AI) as a prospective analytical extension. It combines a qualitative review of technological and Islamic jurisprudential literature with descriptive analysis of seven questionnaire items reported in an original undergraduate research project. The survey charts record 13 respondents drawn from academic, farming and public backgrounds. Reduced physical labour was the most frequently selected benefit (38.5%), followed by resource conservation (30.8%). High initial costs were the leading perceived barrier (61.5%), while insufficient technical skills accounted for 30.8%. All respondents agreed that technology preventing food scarcity supports public welfare: 69.2% strongly agreed and 30.8% agreed. A further 69.2% associated transparent farm data with fairer crop-sharing arrangements, and 84.6% selected a combined permissible or recommended legal-status option. These findings indicate favourable attitudes within a small exploratory sample, rather than measured improvements in farm performance or proof of legal validity. The analysis proposes conditional adoption grounded in preservation of life and wealth, reliable data, equitable access and clear contractual responsibilities. AI implementation, agronomic effectiveness and contractual outcomes require further empirical investigation.
