Abstract

Polygamy is the practise of having two or more wives of husbands at the same time. In Islam, a man is allowed to marry more than one wife with the condition that he is able to treat his wives with equality. It is important to highlight this topic of polygamy in terms of its effects on today’s family context. The idea of polygamy can give an impact on women’s mental health. There’s research shows that women in polygamous relationships experience significantly higher levels of psychological distress compared to those in monogamous marriages. For example, this can be triggered in the woman severe emotional disturbance which in chronic form can lead to jealousy, to depression and anxiety and to a lowered self-esteem. Other than that, polygamy also can affect child development and well-being. Children can feel that they or their mothers are being marginalized by the father in a highly competitive environment for his time, attention and emotional involvement. For instance, when the child watching and waiting for father to leave mother’s house to go to another wife, the child believes he is not important enough for father to stay home with. In results, the children may face a negative external behaviour including conduct problems, emotional and behavioural disorders that adversely affect their development and well-being.
