Abstract

The transformation of Islamic Education teaching methods in Malaysian schools has become increasingly critical in addressing contemporary challenges, technological disruption, and diverse student needs. This chapter presents a systematic literature review examining contemporary teaching methods in Islamic Education within the Malaysian educational context, analysing 22 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2025 in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The review identifies five major methodological themes: digital and technology-integrated instruction, including TPACK frameworks, mobile applications, and Industrial Revolution 4.0 technologies; student-centred pedagogical approaches, including constructivist, project-based, and collaborative learning; multicultural and inclusive education elements; integrative and values-based curriculum approaches; and specialised pedagogy for students with special educational needs. The findings indicate a significant paradigm shift from traditional teacher-centred methods toward technologyenhanced, student-centred methodologies, a shift accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the demands of Industrial Revolution 4.0. Key challenges identified include teachers' limited Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, infrastructure disparities between urban and rural schools, inadequate professional development, and persistent difficulty balancing values inculcation with technological integration. The chapter concludes that effective contemporary Islamic Education teaching requires the strategic integration of digital tools and differentiated instruction for diverse learners, including students with special educational needs, while maintaining Islamic values and spirituality as the pedagogical core. Recommendations for policy, practice, and future research are developed throughout the chapter.
