Abstract

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming one of the most sought-after technologies in various industries due to its numerous benefits. However, the use of AI also raises fundamental questions about its transparency and adherence to the relevant ethical and legal principles. The current study aims to explore the future of law in the era of AI, focusing on medical and bioethics law. The study is a mixture of doctrinal research and secondary analysis of existing literature on the topic. Five databases were used to conduct the literature search: LexisNexis, Westlaw, Justia, PubMed, and Scopus, supplemented by the Google Scholar search engine to retrieve further literature. Results from the selected articles were synthesised and subjected to secondary analysis into different themes relevant to the research questions. AI is already playing a key role in revolutionising healthcare and healthcare practice, hence having a positive impact on medical and bioethics law through automation, machine learning, and other functionalities. However, the “black box” nature of AI decision-making algorithms raises ethical and legal concerns over the accountability and transparency of such recommendations. It is prompting the need for reforms in the existing regulatory framework within the legal profession and the wider medical and bioethics law. The use of AI is inevitable in medical practice and the legal profession. Even so, relevant reforms are required to update the existing laws and regulations to make them more responsive to the legal and ethical challenges linked to the technology.
