Abstract

Caulerpa lentillifera J. Agardh, 1837 is known for its high nutritional content and suitability as an alternative food. Unfortunately, cultivation of C. lentillifera, particularly in Malaysia, faces many problems. This is because the species is sensitive to changes in the environment including reduced nutrient concentration which restricts high production. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of different nitrate concentrations on the nutrient uptake and growth of C. lentillifera. To achieve this objective, C. lentillifera was exposed to a series of nitrate concentrations and a fixed concentration of phosphate (1N:10P, 5N:10P and 10N:10P) in the laboratory for 12 days. The growth rate, fresh weight and nutrient uptake were calculated every 3 days. Results showed increased growth rates and fresh weights for all concentrations tested. The highest growth rate and fresh weight were recorded for 5N:10P at Day 12, i.e. 3.05 ±0.17% and 14.66 ±0.24 g, respectively. The highest rate of nitrate uptake was recorded for treatment 10N:10P whereby 95.1% nitrate was absorbed at the rate of 0.445 ?mol gdw ?1 h?1. Findings can be used as a baseline for the cultivatation of C. lentillifera particularly on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia
