Abstract

Chinese characters form the foundation of Mandarin proficiency, yet many beginner learners struggle with memorization and visual recognition, which directly affects vocabulary development and overall communication skills. At the elementary level, early familiarity with basic characters is essential for readiness in engaging with simple texts and conversations. However, traditional instructional approaches often lack interactivity and adaptive feedback, resulting in reduced motivation and slower mastery. To address these challenges, this study introduces Zi Quest 2.0, a QR-based application developed with Canva Code and embedded with artificial intelligence to enhance students' preparedness for Chinese character recognition. The application focuses on vocabulary aligned with HSK Level 1 & Level 2, equivalent to CEFR A1–B2, ensuring consistency with international language benchmarks. Through QR scanning, learners access character animations, pronunciations, and contextual examples, while AI components personalize practice by identifying errors and adapting reinforcement activities. A quasi-experimental study involving 500 university students revealed significant improvement in character recognition from 52.4 percent to 81.7 percent and stroke-order accuracy from 46.2 percent to 84.1 percent. High satisfaction and increased learner confidence were also reported. The findings demonstrate that AI-enhanced QR learning offers an accessible, scalable, and effective solution for strengthening foundational Mandarin proficiency.
