Abstract

Marital disputes are a universal human experience cutting across cultures, societies, and spiritual belief systems. Differences in lifestyles, personality, expectations, communications, and individual pressures or struggles often lead to a severe dispute. While there are variety of forms and expressions of these disputes, the reality remains the same, every marriage couples want to maintain their relationship harmoniously. However, it requires lots of efforts, contemplations, patience, understanding, and other effective solutions to resolve the disagreements by both parties. Fortunately, Islam is a religion that is full of guidance based on its main evidence, which are Al-Quran and As-Sunnah. It is mentioned that marriage is a sacred bond rooted in tranquility (Sakinah), love (mawaddah), and mercy (Rahmah), not merely a love contract. It opens the doors for human beings that such disputes can be resolved through the guidance of Islam, including Islamic mediation (sulh). In resolving marital disputes, Islam emphasizes that it should be approached with wisdom and sincere intention to preserve marriage. Consequently, Islamic mediation is needed to resolve conflicts between both parties.
