Abstract

A floating photovoltaic (FPV) system has been designed, developed and its performance has been studied. In photovoltaic system, the electrical efficiency of the system decreases rapidly as the temperature of photovoltaic module increases. Hence, to gain the higher electrical efficiency, the photovoltaic module has to be cooled by removing the heat in some way. The intention of this work is to compare the performance of conventional photovoltaic (CPV) with floating photovoltaic (FPV) system. In the FPV system, the absorber which consisted of aluminium flat-box was attached to the back of the photovoltaic module to absorb the heat. Water was used to cool the photovoltaic module by passing it under the bottom surface of the module. Both system had been tested under the solar simulator with the intensity of 460 W/m2, 690 W/m2 dan 855 W/m2. This study showed that the FPV had better performance compared to CPV system. The average temperature of the FPV system was lower than the CPV system, thus making the electrical efficiency produced from FPV system higher than CPV system.
