Abstract

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an economically and nutritionally important vegetable crop exhibiting wide morphological variation. This study assessed genetic diversity among 23 eggplant accessions using 38 morphological descriptors (24 quantitative and 14 qualitative) following IBPGR (1990) guidelines. Significant variation (p < 0.05) was observed for key agronomic traits, including fruit weight, fruit length, plant height, and leaf morphology. Cluster analysis (UPGMA) grouped the accessions into three distinct clusters, with Purple Ball and White Pearl emerging as contrasting cultivars. These findings highlight the importance of morphological characterisation in identifying genetic diversity, guiding breeding strategies, and supporting the improvement of eggplant cultivars for yield, adaptability, and consumer preferences.
