Abstract

This study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of the Aspects of Identity Questionnaire (AIQ-IV) instrument in Malay language translation during the stage of pilot study. The sample for this study consisted of 150 professional counselors selected throughout Malaysia with the use of the simple random sampling method. The study is directed via a survey design with the adaptation of a questionnaire. The Aspects of Identity Questionnaire (AIQ-IV) instrument consists of four subscales, namely personal, social, collective and relational in total of 35 items. The data are analyzed through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The exploratory factor analysis extracted four factors in identity, namely personal, social, collective and relational, with the retention of 20 items. It proved that the Aspects of Identity Questionnaire (AIQ-IV) instrument has assured its validity and reliability for the counseling and psychology field in Malaysia. These particular findings demonstrated the importance of validating instruments that are translated into different languages.
