Abstract
Despite the high cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin compounds in agricultural wastes of Banana Peel (BP), the effects of ethylenediamine (EDA) on the cellulose transformation were unclear. But to be able to use these lignocellulosic substrates efficiently for fermentation by Rhizopus sp. as substrates, a pretreatment process is required. This study will be the first time to use EDA in treating waste of BP to be used in lactic acid (LA) production by Rhizopus sp. later. Furthermore, the pretreatment method using EDA is needed as a simple process to achieve high enzymatic digestibility and fermentable sugar accessibility of the utilized agricultural wastes. The main objective of this study is to determine the optimum pretreatment conditions of lignocellulosic substrates for maximum cellulose allomorph conversion and lignin removal in BP pretreated waste. The transformation of the cellulose was characterized in this paper via scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was found that BP contain high cellulose III of 19.86 % after EDA pretreatment thus, potential ready accessible fermentable sugars.
