Abstract
Social media has become an integral part of students' daily lives, profoundly influencing their attitudes and character. This study aims to investigate social media engagement among secondary school students and identify the positive aspects of their use of social media. The study employed a quantitative survey method involving 373 students in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The data indicate that secondary school students spend a moderate amount of time on social media, and their preferred content is entertainment, followed by education, news, and religion. The data also reveal that students generally demonstrate positive character traits when engaging on social media, particularly in respect and trustworthiness, reflecting the internalisation of moral values in digital environments. However, lower scores in responsibility and, especially, citizenship highlight potential gaps in ethical digital behaviour and community involvement, indicating a need for greater educational reinforcement, particularly in promoting civic engagement, self-discipline, and community service through social media. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of targeted educational interventions in Malaysian schools, aiming to promote well-rounded digital citizenship. These insights also provide essential guidance for curriculum developers and educators in enhancing digital character education within the broader educational framework.
