Abstract

YOLO is an emerging cultural phenomenon that has left profound impact on millennial society. The catchphrase stands for “You Only Live Once” has significantly shaped the trend and choices of many -particularly youth- affecting their attitudes, fashion, preferences, lifestyles and overall worldview. At its core, YOLO promotes the pursuit of adventurous or unconventional activities, often as a justification out of the ordinary, a way to justify seizing fleeting opportunities without fully considering the consequences. More often than not, the YOLO channels youngsters toward hedonistic lifestyles, driven by desire and the pursuit of immediate gratification. Due to its potentially harmful consequences, the YOLO phenomenon has raised serious concern among educators, parents and religious leaders. In light of these concerns, religious insights are urgently needed to critically engage with and intervene. This paper adopts descriptive, historical and analytical approaches to unravel the YOLO phenomenon from multi-dimensional perspectives and, examine its impact on Muslim youth in Malaysia. Furthermore, it offers Islamic insights and responses to this cultural trend.
