Abstract
Background: Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a contagious respiratory disease caused by Bordetella pertussis, transmitted through coughing or sneezing. Despite the availability of vaccination, pertussis remains a public health concern due to the high morbidity and mortality observed in infants. Thus, this study aimed to determine the level of knowledge and attitude towards vaccination, as well as knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding pertussis vaccination among the community in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia, along with its sociodemographic characteristics. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 229 respondents in Kuantan, Pahang, between March and May 2024 using the convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and the analysis was performed using SPSS version 27. Results: Most respondents demonstrated good knowledge (96.1%) and attitudes (53.3%) towards vaccination. In addition, the majority of respondents demonstrated good knowledge (45.5%), attitudes (91.7%), and practices (88.6%) towards pertussis vaccination. Knowledge of pertussis vaccination was associated with age, gender, occupation, household income, number of children and having children with preventable diseases (p<0.05). Attitudes towards pertussis vaccination were associated with gender, area of residence, education and having children with preventable diseases (p<0.05), while practices towards pertussis vaccination were associated with gender, race, occupation and household income (p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings in this study indicate good knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards pertussis vaccination among the community in Kuantan, Pahang. Despite that, variations in sociodemographic groups highlight the need for targeted health education to address knowledge gaps and further promote vaccination uptake.
