Abstract

Background: Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a critical intervention used in intensive care units (ICUs) to support patients with respiratory failure. The ability to understand and manage MV is essential for future healthcare professionals. This study aims to assess the self-perception of MV knowledge among final-year medical and nursing students at IIUM Kuantan. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted among 108 final-year students from the Kulliyyah of Medicine and Kulliyyah of Nursing. A structured questionnaire containing 19 Likert-scale items was used to assess self-perception. Data were analysed using SPSS Version 27. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to explore associations between demographic variables and self-perception. Results: Half of the students reported good self-perception of MV knowledge. Statistically significant associations were found between programme of study (p=0.013) with the level of self-perception. No significant association was found with gender (p=0.165) or duration of clinical posting (p=1.000). Conclusion: Final-year students demonstrated moderate self-perception of MV knowledge. Programme of study had significant influence, indicating a need for improved and earlier exposure to MV education, particularly for nursing students
