Abstract

This newsletter feature highlights the research activities of Assoc. Professor Dr. Mohamad Firdaus Mohamad Ismail from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The work advances research at the intersection of ethics, behavioural science, and preventive approaches in sport and health. It integrates Islamic ethical frameworks and maqasid al-shariah with contemporary theories of motivation, moral reasoning, and behaviour change to examine values-based decision-making in health-related behaviours. The highlighted research focuses on ethical and behavioural determinants of doping deterrence among competitive athletes using a prevention-oriented perspective. The initiative addresses gaps in existing anti-doping approaches by emphasising moral reasoning, value-driven motivation, and culturally grounded ethical processes rather than detection and sanctions alone. The article also describes exploratory international engagement with UK-based expertise in motivation, decision-making, and sport psychology to strengthen the conceptual and methodological foundations of the proposed research.
