Abstract
The need to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions worldwide has accelerated research into effective gas separation methods. Membrane-based separation has emerged as a compelling alternative compared to the conventional methods due to its lower energy demand, operational simplicity, and environmental compatibility. This review systematically examines the integration of UiO-66-NH2, which is zirconium-based with amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) into polymeric matrices to fabricate mix-matrix membranes (MMMs). For CO2 separation. UiO-66-NH2 offers a high surface area, structural stability, and strong CO2 affinity through dipole-quadrupole interactions and reversible carbamate formation which able to enhance the membrane performance. A comprehensive analysis of membrane fabrication techniques, and characterization method is provided with an emphasis on the synthesis method, effects of filler loading, and solvent selection. The reviewed literature indicates the optimal UiO-66-NH2 loadings (≤ 20 wt%) improve both permeability and selectivity over methane (CH4), nitrogen (N2), and hydrogen (H2). However, excessive loadings often resulted in particle agglomeration and interfacial defects in particles that can compromise the separation performance. Apart from that, achieving uniform dispersion and defect-free membranes also involves discussing the importance of solvent polarity (e.g. DMF, ethanol-water) and polymer-MOF compatibility.
