Abstract
This study reviews the advancement of deep eutectic solvent (DES) in biodiesel production. Biodiesel or better-known as FAME is fatty acid alkyl ester derived from renewable resources such as plant waste, animal fats, vegetable oils and lipid of microorganisms. Furthermore, glycerol removal in biodiesel production using ionic liquid i-s becoming popular and need to be explored. Ionic liquid compared to many solvents and catalysts offers many advantages such as low vapor pressure, highly soluble in organic and inorganic solvent, high catalytic activity, excellent thermal stabilities, and possibility on desired design. The study will also focus on the deep eutectic solvent (DES) and the most used solvents in biodiesel processes were DESs based on choline chloride and ethylene glycol or glycerol as hydrogen bond donors. Finally, the possibility of DES recycling and reuse is also emphasized, showing bright prospects for the application of DESs in biodiesel production. DES shows a significant contribution towards the improvement of the biodiesel production.
