Abstract

Urban planning in Malaysia has traditionally focused on managing living spaces— housing, transportation, recreation and commercial areas. However, a holistic approach to urban planning must also include spaces for the deceased. This is where the concept of a ‘life-to-death urban planning approach’ gains importance. It emphasises the seamless integration of cemetery planning into broader urban development, ensuring sustainable land use, efficient resource allocation and respect for cultural and religious values. This approach seeks to treat cemeteries not just as isolated spaces for the deceased but as active components of the urban ecosystem, impacting land use, environmental sustainability and community well-being. It focuses on optimising land for cemeteries while preserving it for other urban needs, thus addressing the challenges of limited land availability, especially in densely populated or rapidly urbanising areas.
