Abstract

This article explores a transformative teaching and learning initiative implemented within the postgraduate course, the Preservation of Library Materials. Grounded in the tawhidic paradigm that integrates intellect (ʿaql), spirit (rūḥ), and ethics (akhlāq), the project situates traditional bookmaking specifically, specifically Coptic stitch binding—as an experiential platform for teaching the principles and values of preservation. Students actively engaged in crafting, binding, and assembling handmade books over three structured stages: preparation and folding of signatures, Coptic stitch binding, and cover finishing. The experience transcended technical skill-building, serving as a reflective practice that fostered patience, discipline, critical thinking, and ethical consciousness. Through this integrative process, students developed an embodied understanding of preservation as both a professional duty and a moral responsibility. The initiative demonstrates that experiential, craft-based learning anchored in the tawhidic worldview cultivates in students not only the psychomotor skills required for conservation but also deeper moral awareness and respect for cultural heritage. It thus offers a blueprint for value-based and skill-integrated teaching within library and information science education.
