Abstract

Prototyping solutions for electric vehicles that improve energy efficiency, as well as self-driving vehicles, are two obvious examples of future mobility. The single-speed gearbox (SS-GB), despite being lighter, is insufficient for delivering sufficient torque during start-up and/or uphill. This study presents an autonomous electromagnetic two-speed gearbox (EMA-2SGB) for electric vehicles. Two electromagnetic actuators are used to change the gears on the EMA-2SGB. Uphill acceleration is accomplished with the first gear, while cruising is accomplished with the second. The electromagnetic actuator (EMA) was modelled in terms of electromagnet size, number of coil turns, supply current, and electromagnetic force that needed to shift gears. In the AEM2SGB laboratory experiment, equivalent road loads were applied for dynamic testing. The AEM2SGB has a first gear shift time of 110 ms at 300 Nm motor torque and a second gear shift time of 116 ms at 110 km/h vehicle speed with a maximum current supply of 16A using a 24 volt lithium ion battery, according to the results. EMA-2SGB advantages over DC motor drive two-speed gearboxes (2S-dcMGB) in terms of acceleration and battery energy conservation due to its quick gear shifting.
