Abstract

The Pergau Dam is the hydroelectric power station in Kuala Yong, Jeli Kelantan, Malaysia. It is the second largest hydroelectric generation installed capacity in Malaysia. Thus, the proposal for a project of ““The Engagement of Research Collaborator to Conduct the Study on Community Awareness and Preparedness for TNB’s Disaster Risk Management for Program Downstream of Pergau Dam” is a challenging project for many reasons. The purpose of the project is to conduct community awareness and preparedness survey and analysis within study areas to identify the best approach to increase public awareness and preparedness towards dam safety and minimizing loss of life and injuries in the event of dam- related disaster. The project incorporates and synergizes three major stakeholders; the community; local authority; and TNB; gearing towards minimizing loss of life and property damages in the event of a dam-related disaster. Early Warning Systems (EWS) are proposed as the primary caution system for early detection of undesirable situations. EWS were set up to avoid or reduce the impact of natural hazards that turn disasters such as floods, landslides, storms etc. with the aim of reducing the vulnerability and disaster risks. Furthermore, the significance of an effective EWS lies in the realization of affected community to benefit.
