Abstract
In aviation industry, accidents during landing are more frequent compared to during take-off, climb up and approaching phases. This study aims to analyse the energy absorption of a Boeing 737 fuselage section under crash belly landing. A finite element model of this fuselage section was created and analyzed using LS-Dyna explicit finite element software. The effects of different vertical impact velocities, terrain conditions, and ply orientations on the composite fuselage skin was studied. For the purpose of investigation, the impact velocities used were 7 m/s and 10 m/s while ground and water surface were used to account for different the terrain conditions. Results showed that frames and skin contribute the most in energy absorption while stringers contribute the least. Other than that, higher impact velocity and ground showed higher energy absorption.
