Abstract

Adolescents are the future, yet they are faced with many challenges in navigating their life especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper explores the potential of Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence to improve coping abilities of Malaysian Adolescents based on past studies findings and the relevant theoretical underpinnings. A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the nature of Malaysian adolescents Emotional Intelligence and Spiritual Intelligence during Covid-19 pandemic. A sample of 395 Form Four students were selected using the stratified random sampling method. Two survey questionnaires based on established scales were used to collect data. It was found that for Emotional Intelligence, the mean score was 3.81, while the minimum score was 2.55; the maximum score was 4.82, and the standard deviation was 0.40. Besides that, that 64.1% of the Malaysian adolescents have moderate level of emotional intelligence, 34.1% have a high level of emotional intelligence and 2.3% have low level of emotional intelligence. As for Spiritual Intelligence, mean score was 3.50, the minimum score was 2.15 and the maximum score was 4.92. Besides that, 66.3% have moderate level of spiritual intelligence, 17.9% have high level and 16.1% have low level. This study findings lend evidence to the state of Malaysian adolescents Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence during COVID 19 pandemic. Considering the important role Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence play in adolescents coping abilities during the pandemic, the results can help relevant authorities and parents to actually focus their efforts in developing the younger generation’s Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence.
