Abstract

This presentation discusses my chapter in the edited book “Cleanliness: The Epitome of Our Faith” (forthcoming). It focuses on the significance of the linguistic concept of ‘verbal hygiene’ first used by Deborah Cameron (2012 [1995]) in our contemporary everyday discourses, in light of the Quran and Hadith. Here, I clarify that the concept of ‘verbal hygiene’ should not be used interchangeably with what my fellow linguists know as ‘linguistic prescriptivism’ – because of the unavoidable negative connotation that the latter entails. Being verbally/linguistically is more about any deliberate attempts to change the way language is used. This way, it ensures accountability and represents a kind of linguistic authority and control as it exerts more agency towards us as language users.
