Abstract

The Melanau tall longhouse in Kampung Sok Sarawak represents one of Malaysia’s unique vernacular architecture. Built in the late 19th century, the structures of this house are made using natural materials which are readily available from the jungle and all of these materials are known to be hardy and water resistant. Belian tree trunks are used as the main structural components of Melanau tall longhouse especially for the columns and the stairs. This tall longhouse is estimated to be over 100 years old, and it is the only original tall longhouse that remains today. Many traditional longhouses have been abandoned due to change in lifestyle and economic conditions thereby turning them into a threatened typology. Recognition of its historical values and adoption of a conservation management plan is crucial in the effort of sustaining this heritage asset. A comprehensive documentation is essential for the preservation and conservation of tangible and intangible aspects of the traditional longhouse. This paper presents heritage preservation efforts through the application scan to BIM method using high-definition 3D terrestrial laser scanning systems as a prerequisite in heritage building preservation and management, by capitalising on two major factors: the completeness and accuracy of data, as well as the potential of creating 3D models of the assets. In capturing as-built information, the system provides opportunities for condition monitoring and assessment; real-time quantity for ongoing operations; spatial information support for maintenance; regulatory compliance, and building forensics.
