Abstract

The ḥadīth on “Prophet Sulaymān Visiting Multiple Wives in A Single Night” has been given as an example of a contradiction between ḥadīth and logic. It tells the story of Prophet Sulaymān sleeping with an enormous number of wives in a single night. Being portrayed as carrying erotic message, the ḥadīth has also been deduced as an example of forgery committed by the ḥadīth scholars themselves. This study aims to clarify the problematic allegations, to deduce the responses and to explain the Muslim’s application of muʿjizāt and karāmah narrative in understanding such problematic ḥadīth. The data provided from the nine canonical ḥadīth books, numerous ḥadīth commentaries and articles are descriptively and analytically analysed through content analysis method. The study concludes that this ḥadīth which has been recorded in canonical collections fulfils the criteria of an authentic ḥadīth according to the methodology of ḥadīth scholars. Hence, the claim of fabrication should be revised; the number of wives should be understood as many in general while the particular number should be ignored. The study also shows that Muslims understand the phrase “single night” according to the narrative of muʿjizāt.
