Abstract
This study focuses on the nature and characteristics of the forts in old Malay cities. This study's objectives are; i) to analyse the characteristics of historical forts, and ii) to compare the characteristics of forts in the historical Malay Peninsula. Content analysis was performed for the secondary data gathered from previous works and documentations. Six drawings of old forts were designed based on the previous excavation works. The matrix analysis indicated the following characteristics of the forts among the forts are: i) located on the top of the hill and facing the river/sea, ii) forts has a wall that plays a role as a boundary that separated from the other areas, iii) these forts located close to the river/sea, iv) the form of the forts either square or rectangle, v) the structure of the forts usually using natural elements.
