Abstract

This article is part of my ongoing research on the interconnectedness of knowledge and civilization in Islam which is funded by the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization – IIIT. Its aim is to describe the following relationships from the Islamic perspective: God-mankind relationship, God-world relationship, Dunya (worldly)-Akhirah (Hereafter) relationship, man-nature relationship and man-man relationship (interpersonal relationship). Understanding these relationships is part and parcel of self-knowledge which is one of the most necessary knowledge and therefore a topic that ought to be included in the Islamic theory of knowledge exposition and the discourse of Islamic civilization. It is incumbent upon every human being to find the correct answers to the following questions: What is human’s place in the universe? What are the things that set humans apart from other creatures on Earth? The uniqueness of human beings lies in the fact that they have a dual nature, i.e. the soul that connects them to Allah and the body that connects them to the physical world. Additionally, they are created with unique intellect and cognitive ability which enables them to change the nature of the earth. This is a precious gift and bountiful blessing from Allah which human beings are required to appreciate. The central argument in this paper is that selfknowledge requires an in depth knowledge of one’s relationships with Allah, fellow human beings and nature or the physical world.
