Abstract

The focus of this study is to investigate the impact of students’ motives for using the social media and their academic related information sharing activities on their academic performance. Guided by the theory of Social Information Processing (SIP), a pilot study using a self-administered survey questionnaire was conducted among 60 students at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Gombak Campus. With the assumption that online relationship able to pose the same influence as face-to-face relationship; once it is fully established, SIP helps to explain the impact of online relationship among the users. The objectives of the study are (1) to identify the status of the students’ motives for social media use, educational-information sharing and their academic performance among IIUM students; (2) to analyze the relationships between motives for social media use, educational-information sharing and students’ academic performance; (3) to test the mediating effect of educational-information sharing on the relationship between motives for social media use and students’ academic performance. The study finds that students’ academic performance is significantly correlated with their motives for using the social media and their educational-information sharing activities. Also, educational-information sharing fully mediates the relationship between the students’ motives for social media use and their academic performance. Thus, this study contributes to the understanding of social media use for academic related-tasks upon improving the students’ academic performance.
