Trends and insights in Stevia rebaudiana research: a global bibliometric mapping

Abstract

Stevia rebaudiana is known as perennial semi-shrub from the Asteraceae family that has got global recognition as a major source of natural, non-caloric sweetener. Its leaves contain steviol glycosides (SGs), compounds that have high sweetness potency and make Stevia an attractive alternative to sucrose and artificial sweeteners. Due to the growing demand for healthier food products, research on S. rebaudiana has expanded across multiple scientific fields. However, comprehensive bibliometric evaluation of the global research landscape on this species remains limited. This study describes a bibliometric analysis of S. rebaudiana research from 2020-2025, focusing on research trends, geographic distribution, and associated bioactive compounds. Using the search string “Stevia rebaudiana” AND “sweetness” AND “steviol glycosides” in the SCOPUS database, 56 publications were retrieved and analyzed using VOSviewer software to visualize co-occurrence networks of keywords, countries, and bioactive compounds. The annual publication trend showed a growth in 2024, followed by a slight decline in 2025. China and India developed as the leading contributors with six and five publications, respectively, while Malaysia contributed two. The findings provide a inclusive, data-driven overview of highlighting emerging themes and geographic patterns that may inform future studies in functional foods, plant biotechnology and natural product development.
