Abstract

Nursing education emphasizes professionalism, competence, and compassionate care; however, the integration of students’ personal religious and cultural values into clinical training remains insufficiently addressed. This paper discusses the challenges faced by nursing students, particularly Muslim students, when providing cross-gender intimate care in clinical settings. While such care is professionally necessary, it may create ethical discomfort and moral distress when personal beliefs concerning modesty and gender boundaries conflict with clinical expectations. Unaddressed value conflicts can contribute to emotional exhaustion, reduced job satisfaction, burnout, and workforce attrition. The paper highlights the importance of incorporating faith-informed perspectives, psychological safety, and cultural sensitivity into nursing curricula and organisational policies. Practical strategies, including privacy protection, respectful communication, and value-sensitive training, can support students in reconciling professional responsibilities with personal beliefs. Integrating faith and professionalism in nursing education not only strengthens ethical decision-making and professional identity formation but also contributes to organisational well-being, workforce sustainability, and the delivery of culturally competent patient care.
