Abstract

Background: Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) remains a significant cause of preventable morbidity and mortality among critically ill patients requiring central venous catheters (CVCs). Although maintenance care bundles have demonstrated the effectiveness in reducing infection rates, variability in compliance of monitoring tools tailored to local intensive care unit (ICU) contexts continue to challenge sustained improvement efforts. Methods: This study protocol outlines a three-phase sequential design that will be conducted in an adult ICU of a Malaysian tertiary hospital. Phase 1 involves a retrospective study to determine CLABSI incidence, risk factors and ICU-nurses compliance using descriptive analysis. Phase 2 focuses on the development of modified Central Venous Catheter Maintenance Care Bundle (mCVC-MCB) Components Compliance Checklist that comprises a documents review conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines to synthesise evidence on CVC maintenance bundle components and compliance measurement strategies. Phase 3 involves on the validation of a mCVC-MCB Components Compliance Checklist. Content validity will be evaluated using Item-level and Scale-level Content Validity Index (CVI) by experts while end-user (ICU-nurses) the validity will be assessed through face validity study that include Face Validity Index (FVI). Conclusion: This multi-phase study will produce a validated compliance checklist to strengthen the infection prevention practices and standardise maintenance bundle monitoring within Malaysian ICU settings
