Abstract

In recent years, critical discussions surrounding hegemonic masculinity have gained significant attention in educational research, particularly within language learning environments. While gender studies have made considerable inroads across various academic disciplines, there remains a distinct need to examine how hegemonic masculinity manifests and is challenged within ESL/EFL (English as a Second/Foreign Language) settings. This comprehensive literature review analyses how traditional masculine norms are confronted and reconstructed in English language education contexts by examining 5 full-text articles published between 2014 and 2024, sourced from the Google Scholar database. These studies explore various dimensions of masculinity in ESL/EFL contexts, including classroom dynamics, teaching materials, student interactions, and pedagogical approaches that either reinforce or challenge traditional masculine norms. The analysis reveals complex patterns in how hegemonic masculinity influences language learning environments, teaching methodologies, and student participation patterns across different cultural contexts. This review contributes to the growing body of knowledge on gender-conscious language education, offering valuable insights for practitioners and researchers working at the intersection of gender studies and language teaching, suggesting that addressing hegemonic masculinity in ESL/EFL contexts requires deliberate pedagogical interventions and heightened awareness among educators and students alike.
