Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition that is among the most incapacitating conditions that affect the elderly. The symptoms gradually get worse over time and manifest clinically as a variety of cognitive, memory, language, executive function, and visuospatial abnormalities. The drugs currently used in clinical settings can lessen symptoms and halt the progression of AD, but they cannot completely cure the condition. Most of the drugs are noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NDMAR) antagonists and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI). Even so, the exact cause of AD is unknown; beta-amyloid expression is frequently linked to it. Drug development for the condition has focused on two main areas in the past, present, and future: abnormal amyloid accumulation and tau protein hyperphosphorylation in the brain. Researchers are now focusing more and more on finding natural substances that may be useful in treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. The most promising possibilities for these molecules have been found to be marine natural products, some of which have shown notable neuroprotective properties. Therefore, this chapter discusses the possible influence of marine microbial products as potential drugs in order to uncover unconventional and potent pharmacological compounds that will be beneficial against Alzheimer’s.
