Abstract
A recently isolated Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strain Lactococccus lactis was found to antagonize a fish and shrimp pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP). This probiotic strain was applied on juvenile zebrafish (Danio rerio) feeding, in order to understand the effect of probiotic strain on young and growing fish. Zebrafish larva at 10dpf were fed with probiotics until 40dpf, and subjected to infection challenge with VP. Four zebrafish’s group were subjected to 4 different treatments: Control, A, B and C. The Control group was given neither probiotic treatment, nor being subjected to VP infection; Group A had probiotic treated without infection; Group B had no probiotic treatment but with infection; and Group C was infected without probiotic treatment. For the infected group (B and C), infection challenges were carried out at 40dpf, and fish survivability, growth performance in term of feed conversion ratio (FCR), the body weight and body length gains were measured at 43 dpf. Results have shown that the survivability rate was 80±7% for Control group; 75±5% for Group A (probiotic treated but no VP infection), and 55±6% for Group B (infected group treated with probiotics). Infected group without probiotics treatment (C) showed no survival. At p< 0.05, treatment A, B and C recorded the higher body weight gain than A, and Control group gave the lowest. In terms of body length gain, treatment B was the highest (~0.88%), while Control group was the lowest (0.52%). This study demonstrated that L. lactis treated as probiotics on zebrafish was able to enhance its growth and survivability during VP infection.
