Abstract

In recent years, wireless communications have grown in both popularity and importance- the foundation of contemporary ways to connect and the fuel of digital change. This book, Fundamentals of Wireless Communications is intended to offer a clear and organized coverage of the important principles fundamental to wireless systems beginning from their historical development to the sophisticated ideas of channel modeling. Chapter 1 – The Evolution of Wireless Communication is an introductory chapter that describes the history of wireless technologies by sketching the key milestones, advances, and factors that have contributed and continue to drive their ever-evolving journey. Chapter 2 – Wireless Baseband Model presents the mathematical/ conceptual framework that is used to represent wireless communication systems, with a focus treated at the baseband. The baseband model acts as a launching point to analyze signals and system performance before taking into consideration how the channel may behave thereafter. Chapter 3 - Wireless Propagation Mechanisms investigates how electromagnetic waves propagate through some environment via physical phenomena. In addition, it also describes key wireless propagation mechanisms like reflection, diffraction, and scattering that affect the nature of wireless signal transmission. Chapter 4 - Wireless Channel Fadings uses the wireless propagation mechanisms from Chapter 3 to investigate the physical principles behind different types of rf channel fading, distinguishing between large-scale fading, small-scale fading and effects on the reliability and performance of the system. Chapter 5 - Channel Models builds on knowledge from Chapters 3 and 4, and looks at methods of modeling wireless channels using deterministic methodologies, and empirical and statistical approaches showing how valid representations of real wireless environments are used in analysis, simulation, and design. Through this progressive structure, the book provides readers with a thorough conceptual base and practical tools to better understand, analyze and design wireless communication systems. It is intended to serve students, researchers, and practitioners who want to obtain a theoretical and applied view of this dynamic field.
